Minot Highway Dept
Report for 2008 Town Report To the Residents of the Town of Minot ,
We
have had another successful year with our road
program this year. This summer we paved about
3 ½ miles of road (a portion of Harris
Road, Hersey Hill School, Simion Road, and a
portion of Brighton Hill Road). We are trying
very hard to keep our good roads good and to
upgrade to others as fast as funding will allow.
We
own a 2003 FL80 plow truck, a 1988 L8000 plow
truck, a 2007 GMC 1-ton truck, a 2001 310SG backhoe,
a 1990 670B grader, a 1989 L-8000 wheeler donated
from the Fire Dept. (sand truck), and a 2007
GMC pickup. We do most of our own digging and
trucking of ditching material in the summer with
town equipment. We are very close to being self
sufficient with our own equipment. But there
will probably always be a need to contract some
services from local contractors. We have been
very fortunate to have developed a strong working
relationship with the newly formed Hebron
Highway Dept... You may have
noticed their equipment in town assisting us
with our summer and winter work.
At
the town meeting in 2003 I reported to the citizens
of Minot that
my long range plan for equipment included replacing
the 1-ton truck the next year (which we stretched
to 2007) and the Ford L8000 in 2005. We have
stretched replacing the 1988 Ford to this year
and due to the fact that it's 20 years old and
always been a plow truck, it is time to replace
it and this budget reflects that purchase. Our
people need to be in newer and safer equipment
when they are out there in the worst of conditions
trying to make the roads safe for all to travel.
As
your Road Com. / Highway Mgr., I want to thank
all of you (the residents of Minot )
for your continued support over the past 8 years.
The
budget for this year has some increases in most
of the departments that I control. Most of this
is connected to rising costs in oil and is reflected
in the price for diesel, propane (heat at the
garage), and electricity (we have to plug in
heaters on the wheeler sand truck and 1-2
buses because the garage is full). Our present
garage consists of 2 fairly large bays and we
park (or pack) in it 3 plow trucks, a skid steer,
and the backhoe. So in closing, if you feel that
you need to make cuts in my budget, please don't
cut from winter roads. This account is the one
that has the most effect on the safety of the
people that travel the roads. We all have the right to
safely travel our roads. Thank you for all of
your support.
Arlan Saunders, Road Com.
/ Mgr.
